What the engine management light actually means
The engine management light, also called the EML, check engine light or malfunction indicator lamp (MIL), is a general warning. It tells you the car's computer has logged a fault somewhere in the engine, exhaust or emissions system, but on its own it won't tell you which fault. To know the specific problem, someone has to read the stored fault code behind the light.
